Annual NEMF Samuel Ristch Foray 2025

Prepare to immerse yourself in the captivating world of fungi at the Annual NEMF Samuel Ristich Foray 2025, taking place from September 18th to 21st, 2025, in beautiful Ithaca, New York. This year's special gathering celebrates the impactful theme "Women in Mycology" while delving into the fascinating intersection of mycology and entomology, honoring the enduring legacy of Samuel Ristich.

What is the Samuel Ristich Foray?

The annual foray of the Northeast Mycological Federation (NEMF) has been named in honor of Samuel Ristich since 1976. Samuel Ristich (1915-2008) was a renowned entomologist, mycologist, and educator. Holding a Ph.D. in entomology from Cornell University, he was celebrated for his interdisciplinary approach to science and his role as a "classic Natural Historian." Ristich's profound curiosity about nature and his passion for sharing knowledge left an indelible mark on the mycological community. He founded the Maine Mycological Association, and his expertise was so valued that the Northern New England Poison Control Center relied on him for identifying potentially deadly fungi and plants. His mycological legacy includes the discovery of a new Amanita species in 1983, aptly named Amanita ristichii, and a particular specialization in slime molds. The foray serves as a continuation of his spirit of discovery, education, and community building within the fungal realm.
